In the picture attached to this post the juvenile male is in the process of changing neck, head and throat colour from a green to a red colour.

However, I've noticed that many male King Parrots have unique markings on their wings, like fingerprints. These are a bluish green colour and very pale but bright compared to the rest of the green feathers on the bird. These unique markings do not seem to change from juvenile to adult. On each wing these markings are different too. These markings are a good way to tell whom the birds' parents are, well, the father anyway. The father will have a similiar patterned markings on it's wings. He is, I suspect, a rescue bird, as he has only one eye and mimics humans and human objects as well as every bird it seems to ever have heard in its experience. At one time it even mimicked the distinctive meow of our old tom cat, though it only did this briefly. The old cat would yell at the magpie when it came to steal his food. None of the females in the group have mimicked anything, to my knowledge, other than the calls of other magpies.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03290778576754075238noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6431980151134286335.post-49051236071143715322013-03-24T12:24:06.423+11:002013-03-24T12:24:06.423+11:00nice blog shirley... poor birds.nice blog shirley... poor birds.SavvyIrenehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03417329735248759577noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6431980151134286335.post-20666308382318869822013-02-06T16:05:22.801+11:002013-02-06T16:05:22.801+11:00I am getting my information from watching what the...I am getting my information from watching what the Red Wattlebirds around here actually do. I watch and I listen for their calls throughout the course of a whole day, 365 days a year. I have photographs to prove they are breeding every 6 weeks. I avoid going anywhere near their nest - most of the time I can't find their nest anyway.

Listening for their sounds and watching what the birds do is a good starting point at understanding and learning about birds. I have regular 'conversations' with our resident male, including clicks. I think he is saying, "What the hell was that - this is how it's done!".
It may be they are taking turns on the nest as the eggs are incubating around November - they seem to go missing for a while, then return with their fledglings around Dec-Jan.
The females seem to be the territorial ones. Our male (they were monogamous for the last 6 years) kow-towed in every respect to the female, but she has now, sadly, gone missing.
Another, very timid, young lady has however, appeared and is slowly establishing herself and getting acquainted.

BobAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6431980151134286335.post-75144205285438318882012-11-17T06:01:13.244+11:002012-11-17T06:01:13.244+11:00Hey Bob! I actually thought he left with his third mate (the first 2 dumped him because of his chosen nesting site). I don't know much about Grey Shrike-thrushes, except for my study on one particular individual which has finally of breeding age. This wolf whistle sound came after a sort of bonding calls the two birds have been making for the passed few weeks. Well, at least I think it is them. Is it possible that this wolf whistle sound has anything to do with them having mated or they female having laid eggs? I'm curious as to why they sing like this then stop it. I'm trying to find a reason for why they make all the different sounds they make. I haven't heard these birds for about a week now. Nesting? Moved on? Any help is deeply appreciated, Bob.Shirley E Hardyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06693223246748297158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6431980151134286335.post-46880744246450655582012-11-16T07:55:13.970+11:002012-11-16T07:55:13.970+11:00It was definitely the grey shrike-thrush. Great to ...Thank you so much for leaving a comment. Great to see another local interested in the birdlife around here. Are you from Tenterfield, NSW and or from Tenterfield, Melbourne, VIC? I really can only guess what plovers eat but on birdsinbackyards website it says they eat insects and their larvae and earthworms from just below the surface of the ground, and sometimes they eat insects on the surface. That sounds about right to me as I've never seen them in a tree or any other place where other food higher up can be found.

I wouldn't recommend trying to take care of the plover eggs yourself. Let the parents do it. If the parent birds are still around the best thing you can do is try and keep cats away from the eggs. If the parent birds have abandoned the eggs it is probably because the eggs are sterile and didn't hatch when they were supposed to. This means the two adult birds will either try again next year or will separate and the female will find a new mate before next Winter/Spring.

Over where I live plovers chicks have already hatched and are flying about the place with their parents already. I'm not sure how many chicks hatched as they've been hiding the chicks really well. So well in fact I haven't been able to take any photos of the chicks yet.

What area of Tenterfield do you live in?
